Freeze Dried Foods are very light-weight but require the addition of hot water for preparation; being dehydrated, they will not freeze, making freeze-dried meals ideal for cold-weather conditions and long-term storage. Mountain House #10 tins have a 25 year shelf-life.
Ready-to-Eat meals, also known as boil-in-the-bag or ambient pouches, do not require any preparation and may be consumed directly from the bag. However, these can only be used operationally in temperatures above freezing.
